Types of shell tube heat exchangers

There are two kinds of heat exchangers. The first kind uses one phase on each side; either liquid or gas. These are known as single-phase or one phase heat exchangers.

The other kind of heat exchangers is the two-phase heat exchangers.

  • Evaporator: These types of shell tube heat exchangers are used to heat a liquid and boil it into a vapor (gas)
  • Condenser: These types of shell tube heat exchangers are used to cool gas (vapor) to condense into a liquid.
  • Inter-cooler and after-cooler heat exchanger: These are used to transfer heat from machinery to other. They comprise of a tube and fin radiator.
